The Center for Studies on Africa and its Diaspora (CSAD) joins Atlanta, the nation, and the world in celebrating the life of U.S. Rep. John Lewis, our 17-term conscience of the Congress and lionhearted peacemaker and trumpeter for justice.
We further acknowledge the loss of Civil Rights giant C. T. Vivian, who was Lewis’s senior in the key leadership circle of the protest movement headed by Martin Luther King Jr.
Their deaths, only hours apart, mark a monumental day in a long era of social justice activism that dates back to the 1950s. We honor their sacrifices and contributions, as their lives offer us models of local and world citizenship. Their deaths remind us that the struggle for human rights continues and must continue as long as injustice exists.
In our commitment to fostering education for future citizens and leaders, CSAD is inspired by the lives of Lewis and Vivian as we embrace and embolden future generations of activists and leaders committed to human equality.
